Smith's of Stapleford History

Frank Ernest Smith founded the company following a highly successful period as head engineer on a regional essential works task force, focusing on the construction of key infrastructure during the Second World War. This included aerodromes, bomb factories and roads. In 1946, Frank Ernest, founded ‘FE Smith Tarmacadam Contractors’, which would later become Smiths of Stapleford.

In the company’s infancy, the firm were at the forefront of technological advancements and were the first company in their area to use ‘red tarmac’, which was pioneering engineering at the time.

During the 50’s and 60’s, the firm developed its commercial base, working largely in the factories and industrial areas surrounding Nottingham and Derby. During this period, Frank Ernest’s daughter, Joy, became involved in the company in an administrative capacity, emphasising the company’s family ethos which has now spanned 4 generations. FE Smith continued its growth into the 70’s and 80’s and began developing strong links with housing developers such as ‘Costain Homes’ and ‘Whitemore Estates’.

During the 1980’s and 1990’s the firm grew rapidly, and began operating across the UK. Indeed, as part of the success, Peter Edge-Stenson (3rd generation) diversified into new markets and expanded the company’s use of equipment to improve efficiency. During this period the firm developed links with national construction companies and large breweries across the UK, working in diverse locations from London to Cardiff to Manchester and Liverpool. In 2003, Peter Edge-Stenson rebranded the firm as ‘Smiths of Stapleford’.

The company currently operates largely in the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire area, specialising in Surfacing and Drainage work; the firm has continued Frank Ernest’s family ethos, with the 4th generation of the family involved now in the firm. In 2016, the firm will celebrate its 70th year in the Civil Engineering industry.
